Dr Paul Smith
PhD Additive Manufacturing Engineering Design, MRes Additive Manufacturing, MSc Computer Aided Product Development
In his research, Dr Paul Smith explores the interaction between technology, tradition and place. He looks at the material and cultural implications of digital technologies for traditional practices and finding the alternative ways of making. As part of his research, Paul makes artefacts to focus his thinking and to explore and articulate his work to others. He is currently investigating the role of maker spaces and new manufacturing technology, such as additive manufacturing might play in innovating traditional practices and their social impact. As a digital designer, Paul works with traditional practices to create example pieces that blend place, tradition and technology. He is motivated by the empowering potential of new technology and the affiliated cultures and how they can catalyse civic change.
