Dr Lorenz Herfurth
PhD in Design; MA Design Management and Policy; German Diploma (MA equivalent) in Industrial Design
Lorenz is the subject leader for the MDes Design Innovation and Service Design module and teaches across the Institute of Design Innovation and the Department of Product Design. His research explores the interdisciplinary and dynamic space between design, organisation and management studies.
He is specifically interested in distributed and de-centralised, yet self-organised forms of organisations (such as project organisations or intra–organisational initiatives). Lorenz has participated in research into design facilitation for knowledge exchange and designing co-design tools. His further research interests cover the relationship between design management and service design, the critical evaluation of design thinking and the potential of silent design for organisational change. He conducted research into distributed forms of design and emergent qualities of the design process, employing qualitative social science as well as design research methodologies.
Before joining GSA, Lorenz pursued an interdisciplinary PhD (Design and Organisation Studies) with ImaginationLancaster, Lancaster University’s design research centre, and Lancaster University Management School, for which he received a scholarship from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Previous to this Lorenz held a post as Design Research Associate with ImaginationLancaster, here he inquired collaboratively into design approaches and mechanisms that support and innovate around the exchange of knowledge within professional networks. In this position, Lorenz had collaboratively developed, designed and delivered design innovation workshops for over 100 businesses, public bodies and agencies.
His scholarly motivation is based on personal experience of the complexities of design, having in the past developed products for international clients from the public transportation sector.
